ACS Publications – SLA Conference Travel Scholarship

ACS Publications is sponsoring a unique opportunity to attend the 2013 SLA Annual Conference, June 9-11, in San Diego, CA

ACS Publications is working with the SLA Chemistry Division to sponsor a travel award of $1,000 to defray the costs of attending the 2013 SLA Annual Conference June 9-11 in San Diego, CA. The scholarship is open to all SLA Chemistry Division members.  The winner will be invited to work with ACS Publications in an advisory capacity as they expand their outreach efforts in 2013.

TRAVEL AWARD:
$1,000 stipend to attend the 2013 SLA Annual Conference. The winner also receives an award certificate at the Annual Conference during the Chemistry Division Business Meeting & Breakfast.

ELIGIBILITY:
All members of the Chemistry Division are eligible. All applicants must have joined the Chemistry Division by March 1, 2013. See below for information on joining SLA and the Chemistry Division.  Travel funds provided by your employer do not affect your eligibility.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Please submit the following:

*        A brief essay (two-page double spaced) on how your library is managing change.  For example, describe how you introduce MOOCs into your curriculum, eliminate print subscriptions, integrate new technologies, or close a branch library.  What procedures, analysis, and steps does your library follow to implement change?

*        Resume or CV

DEADLINE:
All applications must be received by March 15, 2013. The winner will be notified by March 31, 2013. Essays will be judged by a panel of ACS Publication staff and SLA Chemistry Division members.

SPIE Digital Library Student Travel Stipend Award

Award to attend the SLA Annual Conference in San Diego, CA, 9-11 June 2013

SPIE Digital Library<http://spiedigitallibrary.org/about> is sponsoring for library school students the award of a $1200 travel stipend toward payment of expenses incurred while attending the annual Special Libraries Association conference in San Diego, California, June 9-11, 2013.  SPIE Digital Library is the world’s largest collection of optics and photonics applied research.

The SPIE Digital Library Student Travel Stipend Award will be given to the qualified student who submits an essay of three or less double spaced typed pages that is judged to be the best essay submitted describing the following scenario:

You are a corporate librarian working for Super-Fox Engineering, Inc. You were recently informed by management that the company is downsizing the library footprint. Your budget will not be increased to purchase more electronic content, or any additional content for that matter. Management has requested a one page summary of your high-level plan for reducing the library’s footprint while also maintaining the same level of service for Super-Fox engineers.

Qualifications for Entering Award Competition:

The essay winner must be a student member of the SLA Engineering Division at the time of acceptance of the award; Division membership is not required at the time of application. Part of the award will be a one-year student membership to the SLA Engineering Division.

The winning student must attend the Engineering Division annual business meeting, held at the 2013 SLA annual conference.

Special Instructions:

1.  Give your full name, address, telephone number, e mail address, and a statement, on one page, of your qualifications, as given above, for entering the award competition.  Include the name of your library school.

2.  Type your full name (without any additional personal information) at the top of each essay page. Double space the typing on all pages.

Deadline for Submission:  March 15, 2013.

SPARKS AWARD for PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Travel stipend to attend the 2013 SLA Annual Conference, San Diego, CA
Application Deadline: March 1, 2013

The Chemistry Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) is sponsoring a student/new member travel award to defray the costs of attending the 2013 SLA Annual Conference June 9-11 in San Diego, CA. The award is intended to encourage the professional development of student members and new members of the Chemistry Division and encourage their participation in Chemistry Division activities.

TRAVEL AWARD:
$1,500 stipend to attend the 2013 SLA Annual Conference. The winner also receives an award certificate at the Annual Conference during the Chemistry Division Business Meeting & Breakfast.

Individuals who accept a travel award or stipend for the annual conference from any other SLA entity are not eligible for the Marion E. Sparks Award for Professional Development.  Travel funds provided by your employer, your school (for students), or any other non-SLA affiliated group do not affect your eligibility.

Please submit the following:

*        A brief essay that: a) articulates your objectives for professional development; and b) indicates what you hope to gain from attending the SLA Annual Conference. Maximum length: 2 pages.

*        Resume

*        Names of two references

*        Brief budget (expected expenses for registration, airfare, lodging, food and/or continuing education course).
Registration in a Chemistry Division or other Continuing Education (CE) course is recommended, but not required.

DEADLINE:
All applications must be received by March 1, 2013. The winner will be notified by March 18, 2013. Essays will be judged by a panel of SLA Chemistry Division members.

HISTORY:
The award is named to honor Marion E. Sparks, a chemistry librarian at the University of Illinois from 1913 until her death in 1929. Ms. Sparks contributed a great deal to the field of chemical information, her achievements include teaching courses on chemical information, and authoring and publishing what is argued to be the first book to formally address chemical literature and library instruction.
